Rafferty’s legacy is the land the heroine’s grandfather won in a drunken bet against the hero’s grandfather Since then the two families have feuded At the time they met neither the Australian hero nor the English heroine know that the heroine is connected to the feud Heroine lost her family in a plane crash Hero had a loose connection to the football soccer event the plane was traveling to and he stopped in England to convey his condolences It was insta love Hero paid for her trip to Australia and all is well until the heroine’s long lost uncle shows up at their engagement party to remind everyone of a feud that began two generations backHero had no idea the heroine was from the Rafferty family because it was her mother’s maiden name Heroine had no idea either and is upset and bewildered when the hero gives her an ultimatum Never speak to her uncle or leaveHeroine leaves and goes to live with her uncle in his ramshackle house She tries to fix it up and then lines up a job all the while hoping the hero will get over his shock and be reasonable Hero’s family prospered while the heroine’s family didn’t So there isn’t much use of the feud except for a talking point that her bachelor uncle keeps aliveHeroine is wallpapering when she falls off of a ladder and hits her head Yup It’s amnesia By this time hero has had a change of heart and wants the heroine back At first he doesn’t believe the heroine has amnesia until he takes her to his mansionhouse There she meets the OW who warns her off the hero Heroine just wants to right the wrongs that her grandfather did and give the hero back the land That way she won’t be in his debt for her passage to Australia and she’ll have her pride back Her uncle agrees to go along with this since it will make the hero look bad accepting something from the poor family when he is so richThere is a wannabe OM More nonsense from the OW Then the heroine’s amnesia is cured but she doesn’t tell the hero for awhile Finally their original wedding date is looming Hero arranges that the heroine will be stuck in a cabin with him for a few days – successfully “compromising” her They eventually work out their differences Even the uncle is ready to let the feud go once he receives an offer of a job from the H OW refuses to attend their wedding for an HEAI enjoyed this one The feud was an interesting way to create a conflict and to explore the issue of pride and debts and forgiveness Hero had eyes only for the heroine so JC had to throw in some amnesia to keep the conflict going Heroine was actually strategic in how she conducted herself but hero eventually outmaneuvered her So while the angst was kept to the minimum it was fun to watch how these two got together without resorting to the usual tropes

Amusing amnesia story where heroine is not above manipulating others by playing up or playing down her convenient memory loss There is a long and bitter generational feud that drives the protagonists apart The secondary character of the uncouth uncle was instrumental in driving a wedge between his niece and her fiance but he is not really villainous just stubborn bitter and proudThe first half of the story was much stronger Imho the author made a mistake by having heroine recover her full memories too early in the game and then striving to find lame excuses to keep the would be lovers apartAll in all it was a lighthearted pleasant vintage romance

I actually liked this one a lot When the story opens the Hero and heroine are in love and celebrating at their engagement party when they are rudely interrupted by an old man who claims to be the uncle of the heroine He is the sworn enemy of the Hero in a decades old feud started by the grandparentsThe heroine has come to Australia from England and didn’t know any of her relatives She’s just been orphaned and was still grieving when she agreed to marry the Hero The Hero is shocked and angry and he gives her an ultimatum The heroine would have chosen to stay w her fiancé as against this stranger but at that moment when he turned to her she saw no love in his eyes Knowing that her future marriage is doomed She chooses to go w her uncleIt’s actually a double whammy for the poor heroine since she is still mourning her family and now she has lost her fiancé She tries her best to keep house for her uncle but in the process bumps her head and gets amnesia This is key since now it’s the uncle who fills in the blanks for her and at first he makes her believe she came out to Australia to be w him never mentioning the fiancéShe starts working for a cattle auction house where the Hero bumps into her again and she treats him like a stranger At first he cannot believe that she has amnesia but the heroine also starts to suspect there is to the story than her uncle has led her to believe She then forces the uncle tell her the whole storyThe Hero is actually remorseful and confess his love despite the feud He wants a second chance with her He also finally realizes that the heroine really has lost her memory and had he not acted in such a boorish manner none of this would have happened Now he is simply a stranger to her and She refuses to marry himThe Hero has been up north he has purchased another property where they can have their own farm away from the feud but the heroine refuses The bit of angst continues while the heroine has her amnesia there is a bit of OM interest in her that makes the Hero jealous Then the heroine finally regains her memory and remembers her reason for leaving the Hero She had thought he didn’t love her but now with his constant avowals and his willingness to live elsewhere for her she finally believes in his love and is about to tell him whenShe gets a visit from the OWThe OW tries to do the usual sowing the seeds of doubt bit For most part the heroine does not believe her however she now comes to a different realization If she agrees to settle elsewhere with the Hero she will be depriving him of his birthright however if she marries him and stays she will be resented by his people because of the feudThe Hero is relentless he won’t agree to let her go even if she continues to refuse him Despite everything he has not cancelled the date of their wedding he has her wedding dress in his house still hoping the heroine will change her mindThere is a bit of silliness near the end where he keeps them both stranded in a cabin so he can compromise her and force a wedding Finally in the end the uncle also relents and they settle the feud between them and the wedding goes as scheduled OW declines to attendI liked this a lot It didn’t take long for the Hero to feel remorse for what he did he groveled soon after and tried to explain himself He never gave the OW time of day and he didn’t give up
